PTron plans unit in Hyderabad

Once operational, the mobile accessories company expects to meet 70 per cent of its requirements from this assembly plant

Hyderabad: Hyderabad-based mobile accessories maker PTron is planning to set up an assembly plant for mobile accessories in or around Hyderabad, in the next six months.

Sharing the company’s plans, PTron CEO Ameen Khwaja told Telangana Today, “We would like to start making power banks and speakers at the assembly plant. We are looking at an assembly set up spread over 12,000-15,000 sq ft on a pilot basis, where we can do 30,000 units a month, to start with. We will however, continue with our China assembly arrangements for at least 2-3 years. Once the India unit becomes operational, it could take care of about 65-70 per cent of our requirement.”

Launched in 2014, PTron has enhanced its portfolio by introducing a series of mobile accessories into the Indian market. The company established its China office in 2015 and started sourcing products from there. It identified there was a need to work on audio quality for headphones to meet India market needs and its R&D team worked in that direction. There was also a gap in branded accessories in India, which accounted for only 30 per cent of the market, and PTron started to target this space.

PTron currently has arrangements with assembly units in China and products are made there after meeting set testing and quality control (QC) parameters, suiting Indian customer requirements.

Market penetration

“Hyderabad, Chennai and Delhi are the top three markets for the company although our products are also available offline in Bengaluru, Kolkata and Mumbai. PTron, which today has 70 unique products (around 200 with all variants), will explore to tap branded standalone Ptron stores in India. Our US distributor has already created a wholesale store in Houston and stores have also come up in Italy, Myanmar and Nepal. We also have a distributor in Canada. We are also keen to enter into Vietnam and Thailand soon,” Khwaja informed.

The company has delivered over 5 million mobile accessories such as bluetooth earphones, smart watches, bluetooth speakers, power-banks, etc to its customers over multiple online platforms as well as offline distribution and retail channels in India. Its products are available on e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, Flipkart, PayTm Mall moving beyond its affiliated online platform latestone.com and in over 1,000 offline retail stores across the country.

PTron today is recording sales of Rs 75 lakh-1 crore through offline every month and over Rs 3 crore online. Almost 65-70 per cent of the sales are coming from customers in the age group of 18 and 25 and metro cities. The company plans to achieve Rs 2 crore revenues in the next one year through offline and over Rs 4 crore from online platforms. The company aims to clock a Rs 200 crore revenue in the next 3-4 years.

India’s mobile accessories market is growing at a rate of 15 per cent year-on-year, and competition among brands on online platforms is increasing, he noted.

Innovation-centric

PTron through its innovation and R&D teams had been rolling out new products into the market. The company’s products are designed in-house and manufactured as per its specifications.

The company has received global certifications such as FCC for USA, CE for Europe and BIS for India. Backed by these certifications, the company has expanded its business into the global markets and has set up distribution channels in countries such as the US, Hong Kong, Israel and Indonesia.

On the product pipeline, Khwaja said, “In future, we would like to foray into smart home devices, security products and smart speakers in the next one year.”
